MBP-1 vs DIR-8: Difference, When You Need Both, and What Each Answers
Quick answer
What is the difference between MBP-1 and DIR-8?
MBP-1 discloses the director’s interest and shareholding in other entities (Section 184(1)). DIR-8 intimates disqualification, if any, under Section 164(1) or 164(2), before appointment or re-appointment.

At the first Board meeting of the financial year, companies typically place MBP-1 for every director. They often also collect DIR-8 at that meeting as governance practice, even though the statutory DIR-8 trigger is appointment or re-appointment. At a fresh appointment, take DIR-8 before the appointment is effective, take MBP-1 at the first Board meeting in which the person participates as a director, and file DIR-12 as required.
